What drives you?

I was taking my morning walk the other day…

And I was thinking about the concept that we can sum up our purpose in a very short sentence or paragraph.

So many of you struggle with this and I think I know why and I realized I could help you get more clear by using my struggle with this exact thing as an example…

About 5 years ago I was struggling with this in a big way because there were so many things I wanted to do that I didn’t want to claim one purpose and deny the others.

Sound familiar?

This is how the struggle used to go for me…

I have always been clear on all of the things I want to do…

  • Entertain
  • Act
  • Sing
  • Dance
  • Speak
  • Coach
  • Write
  • Create
  • Inspire
  • Reveal the depth of possibility and emotion in everyone
  • Lead

and so on…

The struggle came when I tried to somehow make all of those come together in one perfect purpose statement.

I was unwilling to give any of these things up and had found success in all of them but I couldn’t seem to figure out how they all fit together into one ‘Driving Purpose’ and I knew that as long as they didn’t feel like they all fit into that one driving purpose I would feel divided and like I had to choose…

And then one day it hit me…

And it hit me in the form of a question…

“What are you?” My inner voice asked…

I had no answer…

So it asked again…

“Underneath everything you do, what are you?”

Still nothing…

Somehow my inner voice persisted…

“Every time you perform or speak or write or coach or create or any of the other things that you love to do…who are you when you do ALL of those things?”

And then I knew the answer…

“I’m a story teller and an entertainer!” I answered…

And then my inner voice had another question…

“What drives you to tell your stories and entertain?”

This answer became clear too…

“I tell stories with my acting and singing and writing and coaching and everything I do because I LOVE to entertain and I love to serve as a window to the fullness of emotion and possibility that we all have in us.”

And there it was…all of it in front of me…

It’s true…I love to entertain!  I love to make people laugh or cry or look inside themselves and think…

I love to show a glimmer of what’s possible…

The fullness of what we all have the ability to be, do and have!

And here’s the deal…

I used to think that if I was an entertainer and a story teller…

If I admitted that to myself…

I thought I would have to give up on coaching and speaking and leading and inspiring…

And then I realized I was SO wrong…

I am an entertainer and a story teller when I do all of those things and that is what makes me unique and that is what makes me connect with the people I connect with…

So what is it for you?  What is the starting motivation for everything you do?

  • Some people are teachers – they can’t help the desire to teach
  • Some people are students – they can’t help the desire to learn
  • Some people are healers – they can’t help the desire to fix and heal

There are 8 million things you could be and you are probably your own unique combination of 2 of them…

Here’s the key…

Just because you claim your core doesn’t mean that’s all you are…

You can be a student and still teach…

You can be an leader and still follow…

I promise you, you have ALL of this in you…I just want you to look at your core…where do you start?  Where is your first impulse?

Ask yourself the exact questions above that I asked myself a few years ago…

Once you know what drives you, your choices will be so much more clear…

Remember, this doesn’t limit you in any way…in fact it opens up your possibilities!

Do it now and leave a comment with your answers!

This is so important!

Go Big!

Kristen, I am so much like you in the thought and action process. I am all the fields you mention, I teach, write, party, create, inspire, lead, dance, am a student,a healer, a mother.
Now getting the appropriate help and the correct advice for living a deserved self- fulfiling existance, financial freedom being the focus.
I am seeing the power of the subconscious thinking, but I still have to tend to my present time now…that being fitting into the workings of the government pay system.
This is not helping my definite of purpose as I feel presured to do what I am expected to do. A job that pays and that is it.
No time to get what I really am achieving now. Leads, a great family relationship, time for me.And generally loving my life now.
Do you see I am not there yet as far as financial freedom is concerned.
Thank you for your support and I am following your advice.
    Warm Regards
    Linda Ralph

    what/who am I? If I get a clear answer I\’ll let u know. I really don\’t know yet — am searching, asking, waiting. : )

Thanks so much, Kristen, for your generous insight. We learned to see in terms of categories and thus have compartimentalized ourselves. What you say here clears the lines between those divisions and makes us perceive – with our eyes and our senses! – the whole beings that we are.

MAy life be ever as generous with you!!

      Thanks Cat!

I’m glad I could help blur the lines…you have many pieces to your puzzle and when they are all put together a glorious picture is revealed!

My main aim is to learn all I can about the universal power and giving unconditional love and to share my knowledge. I\’m intrigued by doing simple things that can make a huge difference and when I find something works, I can\’t help sharing it. My goal is to be a \’little ray of sunshine\’ for everyone I meet, to hope that they will feel better after an encounter with me – even if they don\’t know why. Thank you, Kristen, for suggesting I do this exercise. I know there is so much more to learn but that\’s exciting, not daunting. Wishing you love, peace and light, Liz x

That’s great Liz…what does being a ‘Little Ray of Sunshine’ give you? I’m excited that you are sharing with us all!

I am a problem solver. For many years, I styled myself as a troubleshooter (that was the buzzword at the time). When I solve a problem, I feel fulfilled. At the same time, I am an opera singer, and a music lover. When I was younger, I was a belly dancer. I love word games, love to use words to express my thoughts and to understand the thoughts of others. I am a wife, a small office building owner, a commercial property manager, a real estate broker, licensed in California and Nevada (there I go again, writing my resume), a friend, a sister, an erstwhile mother (my only son has schizophrenia and is difficult for me to accept or for him to accept me), a cousin, a political junkie, interested in freedom and liberty for all so that we may all express, anti-Big Government, a spiritual being, interested in fully expressing what the Universe has given me, etc., etc., etc.

I guess it all goes back to “I am a problem solver.” Let’s leave it at that.

Amazing answer! The best part of it is that being a ‘Problem Solver’ obviously is fulfilling to you AND it helps other people!

I totally get what you are saying. Right now I am slowly but surely finding what drives me. I love learning about the brain and the subconscious mind and the hidden powers that I know everyone has and to get it out. I also love animals, astronomy, etc.

HMMMMM…..i was watching the secret last night…again…..i might have fallen asleep cause i was up since 0600 in the morning. But i’ve seen the movies the secret & beyond the secret more then once and more then twice it kinda starts to run thru your mind so i bought the audio & book called awaken the giant of Anthony Robbins. which i tend to listen much to the audio & ive got the book called mind programming from Eldon Taylor, and these are good books to take with me on my vacation to florida. And cause the flight itself will be 14 hours total from Brussels to New York 3 hours and Int.national airport waiting for the other plain to fly another 4 hours or so to Florida…..so these 2 book kinda cover it for me and will stop from starring outside the window beeing utterly bored…….. 🙂
