Calm Over Troubled Waters

I got a call from a dear friend, asking me to participate in the Four Mile Canyon Benefit Concert in Boulder, Colorado. The area had been ravaged by fire, and over 165 homes had been lost. This concert was intended to raise money and give the people of Boulder hope in rebirth and renewal. I was really excited about being part of this incredible event, and about sharing the stage with some very powerful musicians like Malcolm Watson, known as The Barefoot Violinist, and many others.

As my flight approached Denver, Colorado, I was thinking and meditating to myself, “I have the power and the courage to move steadily through all my experiences, no matter what they may be, and to stay at peace and harmony at all times.” I had been going through some tough times, and I had found this affirmation to be one that I could not only recite, but also embody at a cellular level. I had meditated so much on these words that I felt one with them.

The event was a huge success, and I was excited to have gotten the opportunity to partake of giving to people that had lost so much. All of us had put such energy into it that we decided to relax and head up to Nederland the next day, to visit a crystal store where I wanted to buy my son some gifts.

On the way up, we stopped at a world famous waterfall. I was excited because I love being outside and, even more, listening to the sounds of running water. As we approached the falls, I was drawn to climb onto the rocks, to get closer and experience the mist. I felt like I was in heaven. After standing there for a few minutes, taking a ton of pictures and some incredible video with the new camera I had just bought before making the trip, I decided it was time to go and started navigating my way back to the shore.

All of a sudden, I felt my feet slip from under me, and in an effort to balance myself, I threw my hands out… and there went my new orange $235.00 camera into the water! I looked at it for a minute, wondering “should I jump in and get it?”, which I did after a few seconds, and picked it up.

Now the weirdest thing happened… I was not angry! In the past I would have been a basket case about getting wet, dropping my new camera in the river –which by the way never worked again, but I was calm. Why?

Earlier, I mentioned that I had been meditating I have the power and the courage to move steadily through all my experiences, no matter what they may be, and to stay at peace and harmony at all times, and I did so every day for a couple of months. I had taught my subconscious mind not to be reactive and, instead, I acted automatically from the new thought and paradigm.

We all have the power to control our thoughts and create the reality that we manifest. Instead of the old reality, where I lost control when things got tough, I now had a new paradigm: “Calm over troubled waters!”


Quick Tip Look Who’s Talking…
A great way to help yourself shift from ‘reaction’ to ‘inspired, positive action’ is to be prepared. Here is a tip on how to do that…

Make a list of your ‘hot buttons’ – we all have areas in our life where we tend to ‘react’ more than we would like. So make a list. Don’t judge yourself, just become aware.

Then, make a list of your ‘flow areas’ – we also all have areas in our life where we tend to ‘flow’ with things when other people might get stuck in ‘reaction’.

Now that you have both of these written down, ask yourself this powerful question…

“When I am in ‘flow’ vs in ‘reaction’ – what is different for me?”

Pay attention to how you breathe differently, what stakes you have attached, the confidence you feel. And then ask yourself this…

“How can I consciously use the awareness of me in the ‘flow’ when I am tempted to react?”

This will bring a WHOLE NEW AWARENESS to you the next time one of your hot buttons gets pushed and you will be excited and surprised at how much easier it is to make a choice instead of getting stuck mindlessly reacting.

  5. hi KRISTEN I just “found” your website and I know that nothing just happens by “accident” they are what I call “Godincidences”.
    I needed to hear this blog in particular, because I have a TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) and this can result in my being “frustrated” when I let people push my hot buttons.

    I have used affirmations and mantras before to clam my mind..

    However one must first be aware of when you hot buttons will be tested..

    This awareness has made such a difference in my life and that I find that when I have incorporated the technique that you recommend using here that it does work much better for me.

    I stumbled across you through a long list of people and months and months of research on self improvement. A lot of well intentioned people out there, or maybe not so well intentioned trying to teach something they know nothing about. You are real! I have seen enough to recognize fluff from reality.     Such a timely message! Usually I’m pretty good at maintaining calm, but last night something happened that hit my hot button and I flipped out. Of course I was embarassed afterwards. I tried not to be judgemental of myself and (re)committed to trying to be more in control in the future. This affirmation that Daniel offers here is a wonderful tool that I will use every day to stay in the calm flow that my heart is much happier in.

Just yesterday I reacted with rage to a situation, which after fretting and then pondering, I realized how unnecessarily the energy is spent, instead of catching one’s thought which triggers the reaction, and which never blesses. Innately we all recognize the Source from which we sprung..This reminded me of Kenneth G. Mills, who once said, “If you cannot love the one you do see, how can you love the One you do not see” Thank You!

    Funny, I’ve been working on this very thing for months now. I’ve been put in a situation where I constantly have to learn to act,and not react. Reacting in the past has ended up costing me relationships and happiness; and now gaining control over how I handle unpleasant situations is giving me a new lease on life.
