Gratitude Guilt

By Kristen Howe

Gratitude is an essential element when you want to raise your vibration.  You hear about how important it is at every turn. I personally talk about it all the time and it is a major part of many of my programs. So, here’s the crazy thing that I want to share with you today – because I’m concerned you may be struggling with it and it actually may be sabotaging your manifesting…

What is it?

Gratitude Guilt!

What? You heard me, and here is what seems to be happening with a lot of people…

They realize the importance of gratitude, so they decide to start incorporating it into their lives – and they make sure to take time for gratitude every day. At first it goes great – they feel better, they feel alive and aware of how much is in their lives that they can be grateful for that they weren’t even noticing before. They start to feel much more connected to the power of the moment. They even start to notice that during the rest of their day (not just during their gratitude sessions) they are seeing more and more things to be grateful for – big things and small things seem to leap out at them and they are excited by how amazing these new found gratitude glasses feel.

And then…

The gratitude guilt starts to creep in. And they start to think things like:

  • Well, I don’t want to make other people feel bad with all I have to be grateful for
  • It’s not fair that I am experiencing gratitude for my life while the people I love aren’t
  • My friends and family are going to judge me, so I’d better not share how grateful I am
  • I don’t want to rub anyone else’s nose in my gratitude
  • If I’m not struggling, then what I achieve isn’t valuable, and gratitude has eased my struggle, etc.

Does any of this sound familiar? And can you see why Gratitude Guilt sabotages manifesting?

Here’s the deal – when you start feeling gratitude for your life, you begin to see things completely differently. You see opportunity where you would only have seen struggle, you see how powerful you are because of the natural gifts you were born with, you begin to feel connected to the creative power of everything and therefore limitation starts to feel like an outdated concept.

All of that is AMAZING! And feeling grateful is not a crime – it is not something to hide or be ashamed of. When you are grateful you are celebrating your life – that doesn’t mean you are saying that your life is better than someone else’s. Every single one of us has something to be grateful for. So, when you choose gratitude – you choose to give your attention to everything good that is in your life (even those things that may seem to be wrapped up in negativity become something to be grateful for). So, you aren’t saying your life is better than anyone else’s, but you are acknowledging your power to choose gratitude. You are deciding that life is infinitely more fulfilling when you are paying attention to what is right instead of what is wrong.

Keep on reading to find out how to embrace your gratitude…

Does this mean you need to get everyone else on board and teach them all to be grateful too? NO…

Does it mean that you need to run around constantly talking about how grateful you are about everything in a bragging and proving way? NO…

When you are authentically grateful – you accept your gratitude without feeling that you should hide it. You stand in it confidently and claim it without screaming it at people. You appreciate that you are making a specific choice about how you want to look at your life and that it is your birth right to feel incredibly grateful even if others don’t share that point of view.

Life is a gift my friends – you have every right to feel grateful for this gift. Allow yourself your gratitude – there is something to be grateful for in every single moment. There is nothing to be ashamed of, there is nothing to feel guilty about – you deserve to feel grateful – your abundance depends on it.

And when you choose the path of gratitude, you allow yourself to see and really FEEL how grateful you are for every unique thing about you, for every opportunity and lesson, for every interaction, for every laugh, for every sunrise and sunset, for every moment you are human and have to get back on track, for your body, your mind, your spirit, for every single breath.

And when you choose this path and embrace it as your right – you raise the vibration within you and around you and you live as an example of the choice we ALL have the power to make. And you honor the gift that life is.

You will have ups and downs and ebb and flow and it is all beautiful because it is all the experience of life. When you allow yourself to see and feel the beauty around you and within you – you free yourself up to manifest the life you truly desire.

Give yourself the gift of gratitude – embrace it – and when you forget, remember you are human and be grateful for that. What a glorious thing it is to feel grateful for all the gifts within you and around you – what a glorious thing it is to be around someone in gratitude.

Quick Tip Look Who’s Talking…
When getting into a state of gratitude, sometimes you may find that your brain resists you – that is when I use this combo power statement and power question…

“Gratitude is my birthright – life is a gift – there is always something to be grateful for, it is simply up to me to choose to discover it. What can I discover right now that I am grateful for?”

Try using this every morning when you wake up and you will be amazed at how different your day goes.

Thanks Kristen for your uplifting messages.

I took your advice and made my first step. Actually it was more than one. I started an online business.

Wish me luck!

– Charles

This is very interesting and true. If one is not grateful at any moment it means he is sad about the situation, and in this mindset, he cannot see any opportunity but negativity around him.

Kristin this was a great article and struck a huge cord for me. I had huge gratitude guilt growing up. I felt guilty or bad because of things my family (both in terms of close and loving relationships and material things) had that others didn’t. I focused on the fact that other people would think badly of me for having things and I would try to minimize the importance of my family relationships and surroundings. It made it very difficult to be joyous in my own blessings and instead of embracing them, I down played them. This has continued to interfere with my life and sabotage my dreams because I try to keep myself small so people will accept me. Of course my conscious mind knows this is ridiculous but that subconscious pull sneaks in there. The crazy thing is that no one ever said anything about my “fortunes” and I was always accepted where ever I was. It was always just that limiting belief system that developed so young. Thank you for this post as I continue to grow in gratitude:)

    Thank you, dear Kristen!

I really love your work, your program, your short, inspiring letters, all your articles and tips.
Though I’m not at the place yet to purchase any of your products, I’m very grateful for all that I have access to and the fact that you’re an actress also resonates with me in a special way, because I’m also in the performing field (I’m a professional dancer- ballet and contemporary).

If you observe the world as it really is you cannot help but be grateful. TRULY observe as it REALLY is minus your ego and its opinions, analyses and judgments. It is judgment that gets in the way of gratitude. If you truly observe you will be in total bliss and gratitude. There is only light. Darkness simply, literally and absolutely does not exist. Poverty, lack and not having are just avatars of darkness and as such do not exist. Stuff and only stuff exists. Poverty is the nonexistence of stuff and does not exist. People are becoming progressively more focused on the darkness of not having.
Appreciation and gratitude is where it’s at. And it all begins with observation. Obserfvation minus judgment.

    Hey Kristen,

This article couldn’t have manifested at a better time for me. I have currently been suffering from “Gratitude Guilt” after the honeymoon phase of my daily gratitude listing wore off. I’m happy that now I understand why I felt the way I did because it was hard for me to wrap my mind around why I was “being scared to be grateful”, ya know? Anyways, I look forward to the next tidbit of information and I am thankful for you because you are dedicating your life to helping with this huge shift in global consciousness that’s currently going on. I would be very confused right now if I weren’t “awake” – cheers to not being “sleep” 🙂

    Best wishes,
    Bryson

    • Kristen says:

I love that you call it the ‘honeymoon phase’ of your gratitude list – that is the perfect description! You deserve to be grateful and as you are, you also help raise the vibration around you!

      Cheers!
      Kristen
