How Negative Energy Affects Your Life
and How to Clear It

You know that like attracts like, right? So here’s the deal: Positive people are drawn to positive energy; negative people are drawn to negative energy.

We tend to perceive negative energy as something other people have. Sure, sometimes we feel negative – as in, “go away and leave me alone, world!” but did you know that negativity can be so ingrained in you that it goes unnoticed?

That’s because negativity sometimes wears a disguise called ‘reality’. It’s easy to rationalize that you’re ‘just being realistic’ in not daring to act on a dream – and believe it!

You may assume that positive people are not being realistic – that they’re being naive, that they are in denial with their heads stuck in the sand, that they put on fake smiles in the face of difficulty and so forth. But are they really happy idiots or is there something to their positivity?

Consider this: since when does ‘being realistic’ necessarily mean that things will go wrong and that you have to accept that as the truth?

That doesn’t mean that being realistic is automatically negative. When you view the world from a ‘realistic’ standpoint, you can’t help but be negative IF your version of reality is negative.

If your version of reality is negative, you are conditioned to believe that whatever can go wrong, will go wrong and whatever can go right, will probably go wrong too. Your unconsciously held beliefs make you into a negative person without your being aware of it!

So – if this negativity is so ingrained in you that you don’t notice it, how do you determine whether you’re stuck in a cloud of negative energy that is attracting the wrong people, wrong situations and wrong feelings? And how can you be sure you’re not perpetuating that negativity?

Here’s a quick quiz to gauge the level of negative energy within you:

  • Do you complain? All the time or just sometimes?
  • Do you often discuss what’s wrong in the world more than what’s right? This includes the ‘terrible’ weather, ‘horrible’ traffic, ‘idiotic’ government, ‘lousy’ economy, ‘stupid’ in-laws, etc.
  • Do you criticize? All the time or just certain people?
  • Are you attracted to drama and disaster (can you unglue yourself from the TV when there’s a news story of a disaster and can you avoid getting involved in the lives of dysfunctional celebrities?)
  • Do you blame? All the time or just certain situations?
  • Do you believe that you have no control over most of your results?
  • Do you feel like a victim? Do you talk about people doing things to you?
  • Are you grateful for what is or will you be grateful when things finally start going right for you?
  • Do you feel like things are happening to you? Or do you feel that they are happening through you?

These last two points are important:

If you’re not grateful except when things go right, you are negative. Gratitude is positive. If you are grateful for what is (including the unpleasant school of life lessons, then you can invite more and more positive energy into your life.

Believing that things happen to you puts you in the role of victim; then it’s easy to be negative because it’s convenient to give up that power. So consider this alternative: who or what is to blame when GOOD things happen to you? Do you acknowledge that you are responsible for the good things – as in, you worked hard, you earned it, etc… but blame external events or other people for your failures? So how come, when good things happen, they are a result of what you do, but when bad things happen, they are not your fault?

Nobody likes to hear that. It takes courage to accept that you create your life experience!
If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you are holding on to negative energy to some degree! To clear your negative energy and raise your vibration, you will need to retrain yourself to choose a positive attitude.

Here’s another interesting idea to consider: have you noticed that positive people seem to get what they want out of life, and even if things don’t go their way, they still enjoy their lives… while negative people whine and moan about their misfortunes and even the good things in their lives?

To clear negative energy, try this 3-step process:

1. Take ownership: “When you think everything is someone else’s fault, you will suffer a lot. When you realize that everything springs only from yourself, you will learn both peace and joy.” – the Dalai Lama

2. Cancel negative thoughts and replace them with positive thoughts. This takes practice, dedication and making a decision to see the world through the eyes of “what can go right” instead of “what can go wrong.” You’ll have to catch yourself anytime you are acting out or speaking out your negativity, and immediately change your tune.

3. Use the Love or Above Spiritual Toolkit to clear your energy and bring more light and love into your life; visualize the positive instead of getting sucked into negativity; overcome past conditioning; think intuitively from the soul instead from ‘reality’; create a new, desired reality in your imagination and manifest it in the outer world. Nobody wants negative energy to permeate their lives, yet many of us allow it. But we allow it unconsciously, based on past conditioning that suggests an inevitable outcome to certain situations. When you overcome that conditioning and realize that the future is NOT cast in stone but that you have more control over your circumstances than you believe – then you can begin to consciously design your life.

What’s going to happen then? Your positive energy will magnetically attract what you consider to be good and right for you: people, situations, things… and you’ll notice a huge, huge increase in your happiness and inner peace.

Here is another way for you to shift from a negative vibration (the vibration of Lack) to a positive vibration (the vibration of love and prosperity)…Start celebrating other people’s successes and wins. That’s right, shift the focus to other people and start looking for things to celebrate (even if they aren’t celebrating it) – this is the coolest thing, because when you do this, you instantly raise your vibration which raises the level of your manifestations AND you raise the vibration for that other person (without them even knowing it).     I guess mine is a typical story, it seems that I repel money, even though I’m making more now than I ever have, my account is almost always in the negative. I get direct deposit and was paid yesterday. My wife called me and told me that we are on the negative.

    What can I do to reverse this?

      Hi Art! Start with your story – right now, the story you are telling yourself and others is that you are typical and repel money and your account is almost always in the negative. As long as you continue to tell that story, the story will perpetuate. So, it’s time for a new story – and one that you can believe – for example “Every day I see more and more proof of the wealth and abundance that is circulating all around me and within me.” – and become a seeker of proof – look for small signs of abundance in your life and in the lives of others and then celebrate it – when you do, you put yourself into vibrational harmony with abundance!

I succeeded in shifting the vibration of lack into acceptance and prosperity and celebrate today my beautiful body and what I Am able to be aware of through my senses. I can hear enough now.     Energy is so easy to fix through the mind – that is so true. When I find myself being a naysayer I then switch that thinking pattern to why can’t I do this. Is there a rule that says I can’t at least try? If I can’t do it the “expected way” maybe I’m supposed to do it a different way – and that’s okay. Maybe even better ! I like the part about who you blame when things go right. Nice twist.

    I loved this article and it made me wake up to a realization, painful though it is, that I am more negative deep down than I realized. No, I have realized that my being intolerant of others, critical of others and complaining was not going to help my vibrations, but it just really hit home more deeply with this article. Something happened this week that hurt me very deeply and it was hard to imagine that it was my fault….My agents had sent an email to introduce me to someone that I’d deeply love to work for and her response was curt and insensitive, saying ‘I’m not interested’, not even knowing me or my value, not taking the time to even look at the links provided to her showing my talents and gifts…and I realized, “no, maybe I did not directly deserve that response, but haven’t I acted that badly to others I don’t even know, on the phone, in traffic, for instance?” I was getting the negativity back at me, just as I spew it out from time to time. I have vowed to work on these habits in my personality and I know I will also have to forgive myself when from time to time I have a lapse. ” Onward and upward….

      Hi Debbie! Great for you for being honest with yourself – and remember, negative output doesn’t define who you are – it is simply a habit – so love yourself and decide to flip the coin – the other side of that coin is positivity 🙂

    Hi Kristen!
    I’m working on limiting my contact with negative people but there is one area where I’m stuck. My neighbor with whom I share a driveway is a classic toxic personality. Any chance she gets she will stop me when I’m outside doing anything, whether I’m taking out the trash, on my way to work or an appt. or coming home from somewhere. She will try to engage me in an endless one-sided conversation that usually ends up being about all of the drama in her life, how pissed she is at everyone who is doing her wrong, and she often ends up crying. She also comes to my door to do the same though not as often. I know I need to set boundaries but I’m not sure how to do that without offending her or hurting her feelings. So for now, every time I’m outside my house, whether coming or going, I pretend I’m talking on my cell phone. She will still occasionally try to talk to me during those times but it’s not nearly as often. In the process of trying to limit my contact with a negative victim I have allowed myself to become resentful, riddled with guilt, and a victim myself! It is often hard to relax in my own home and it has impacted my home life a lot. I know this is lowering my vibration and interfering with positive manifestation. Any suggestions you may have are greatly appreciated! Thank you!

      Yes, it appears the Universe is calling you to set boundaries – and I understand you don’t want to hurt her feelings – however, you can’t control her and how she responds AND let’s flip this on its ear for a second – are you helping her by not setting boundaries? Or are you simply helping her stay comfortable in her own negative pattern? You don’t have to be mean about it, however, you do need to honor yourself and how she takes that and translates it has nothing to do with you and everything to do with her.

    Dear Christie,thank you very much for a wonderful post I truly enjoyed it..
    However I do have a problem and wondered if you can help..I do try and live
    My life in this manner, I have a husband that’s an alcoholic en a son
    Of 18 that’s a drug addict he is on crystal meth for the past for years
    I do every thing in my power to make them see life in this way, I visualize
    e how they are clean and happy and how we can live a happy and normal
    Life but the opposite keeps happening, I still stay positive but the last week I
    Have had enough of the abuse the swearing ect. What am I doing wrong even if things go so wrong I am grateful for the small things..pleae tell me what am I doing wrong???

      Hi Charmain!

      It is essential in these moments to realize that you can only choose for you. You can’t force someone else to join you on this path as they have their own journey and lessons to learn. However, the more you focus on you and raising your vibration, the more that will have impact on the people around you. That being said, don’t fall into the temptation of raising your vibration to get that response from other people – simply do it because that is the path to your personal expansion. Love and support yourself, raise your vibration and you serve yourself and the world. And let everyone else travel their journey – I know this is difficult because we sometimes wish we could do it for them, but all you can do in your relationships is honor who YOU are.

    Kristen, you are a candle in the night.

    I have so many “subliminal” and positive downloads (free & purchased) that I feel I am spinning as much as the CDs I’ve burned them to… I even purchased (and listened to) Christie’s clearing meditation series…

    I am currently out of work and facing $200 in bills next week or lose electricity, phone, Internet connection. Although I have been submitting an average of two resumes/applications per day for the past month, the response has been less than “positive”… Is something better about to “unfold”?

    In my “gut” I know that I will have $$$ by the end of the month despite the “looming” tragedy about to occur without an income, savings, credit…

    What do you suggest I do to manifest a smooth solution…?

      Hi Robert – remember, the source of all lies within you – so, give your focus and love and expansion to that inner knowing that you already have what you desire and you simply need to activate the energy of it. This becomes about translating what is true from within (instead of from what you SEE in the outside world) – remember, what you SEE in the outside world is a mere sliver of the full picture – allow that their is so much opportunity around you always. Before you send your resumes, bless them with your love and support and ask them to be guided to the perfect connections for you.

    I do have negative energy to clear
    I find it challenging when my partner constantly tells me I’m negative when I’m trying to be positive and believe in myself
    Any ideas for me to support myself in thus situation

      Hi Kathy!

      We teach people how to treat us – is the first thing that comes to mind, so your partner is merely reflecting something you feel or fear within yourself about yourself. Remember, you don’t need validation from outside of yourself – you ARE all that you desire to be. You don’t need to TRY to be positive, you can simply BE positive. And when you slip up – don’t judge yourself for it (that’s what your partner is reflecting, your self judgment) instead, love yourself and support yourself – say, “Ok, we slipped into that – what is a powerful and positive choice I can make right now?”

      You ARE everything!

    This article was so in sync with my life right now. I have been in cancer mode since sept 2013. It has been a lesson and blessing. I didn’t realize how controlling and negative I was until I had no control and had to let go and surrender to a higher power. I am humbled, grateful and accept all of life, the good bad and ugly. But I have made a choice to be a happy positive healthy being.

    I can’t tell you how grateful I am for waking up my thoughts to a more positive world. I was raised in a very negative home so how I had always thought was “normal” . Wow what a difference! I’m changing more every day.

    Mind tuning is not as easy as it seems, but perseverance ultimately does it. Most of the negative thoughts wait for the most opportune moment to attack, and that is In-Solitude!!. When you are on a long drive alone or watching something on TV, something triggers and there is a sudden upsurge of negative feelings. And these thoughts don’t actually vanish. But this is where the conscious mind comes to play. Every time a negative thought occurs, I consciously ward it off within seconds and this practice of consciously doing it has gone into my subconscious. Thanks to all the lessons including the “NOW” method.

    I had a very stressful child hood and always believed that things didn’t work out for me because of the way I was brought up , my parents split up when I was 9 and we lived with mum while my father lived 13 thousand miles away, which meant seeing him was impossible as a youngster, however on the bright side I have been married for 26 years I have a wonderful wife and 3 fantastic children and a beautiful granddaughter, that all said I have worked physical very hard for my family since I left school and now i’m 3 weeks away from being 50 years old I still recognise I have limiting beliefs about my future as I have never reached the financial rewards I thought my hard work would bring for me and my family, I am very grateful for my family and the home we have but I do no I still have these doubts about myself which I think are all to do with my childhood and my parents bad relationship, I often catch myself saying “if only I had had a normal childhood” I do feel I would of achieved far more had I had a childhood without fear of violence and anger,

      Hi Andy! Thanks for sharing this, and this is what I encourage you to do – their is no denying that your childhood involved fear and violence and anger – yet that is all in the past and although you gathered some beliefs from it, that history is not WHO you are. That history is in the past – try this – for 30 days, at the end of every day, write down all of the proof you saw that day that supports that the world is full of support and love. Look for this proof everywhere (even in other people’s lives) and the celebrate it. You are magnificent and it is time to change your story that you tell yourself – it is time to let the history be history and to look for proof of love, support and caring everywhere – when you do this, your feelings will change – your beliefs will change, your actions will change, your life will change!
