Issue 190 – Good, Better, Best

Good, Better, Best

By Carolyn Cooper

Most of us start out feeling fresh at the beginning of a new year. We get our plans, activities, intentions, and goals written down and then, unfortunately sometimes a few months into it, and as our calendars and lives fill up, those resolutions begin to lose a little steam, if not outright go by the wayside. We live in a busy world with so many wonderful and life-enhancing activities to choose from on a daily basis.

Choice is a great thing. It gives us opportunity and variety, but it also has a dark side: too many choices can add to our overall busy-ness by causing us to take on too much. It can cause us to lose sight of our ultimate goals, and it can lead to mental vapor lock. How can we learn to choose wisely and well?

When overflowing choices start to overwhelm me, I use the “good, better, best” filtering system. This system is a tool that helps me achieve my goals and aspirations, because some things we have to just let go or not go after because although they may be good, or even better, we are going for the best goal!

Since there is never enough time for all the good things you’d love to do, you need to choose wisely, and choose things that match up with the goals you’ve set for yourself. In a more general sense, they should line up with your core values as a human being. Often, this alone will help you weed out a good many choices with very little trouble.

Set aside an hour to prioritize your life. Write out a list of all the important elements in your life, such as family, work, education, hobbies, church, activism, self-improvement, etc. Ponder which parts are most important to you (there are no wrong answers here, by the way). Any choice you face in your life will fall into one of these categories, so if you rate their importance, it gives you a good measuring stick to begin with. So the top third of your list is the best, the middle third is better, and the bottom third is good.

When you are presented with a choice to participate in an activity or otherwise invest your time, where does that activity fall? If it falls in the upper third, the best, then your choice is clear. If it falls in the bottom third, and you have many projects going in the upper third, that option can be dropped without remorse. If you have little going on in the top third and a bottom third option presents itself, by all means, go for it!

Even if now, in this particular season of your life, you find you can’t participate in some of the good stuff, remember that seasons change. In a future season of your life, you may have more time to devote to the good activities, in addition to the better and best. For instance, I’ve always loved learning new things. When I was a young mom with babies, there were always classes available to take, but I had to really pick and choose wisely because although those classes were good, (and some even better!) being home to read stories and kiss my babies good night was the best thing I could do at that season of my life. Now that my kids are older, it’s a good season for me to take an occasional class that fits in with the goals I’ve set for myself.

So take a breath and slow down. Take the time to use the good, better, best system to decide your best course of action is every day. You’ll find you have more time, energy and are closer to your goals than you would be otherwise!

Thank you for your words of inspiration and encouragement. Be well, Jan”

Quick Tip

Overwhelm can take our legs (and thoughts) out from under us. Here is a great tip to keep things simple and make sure every day is a powerful and positive day for you…

Every night before you go to bed, ask yourself the following power question about the next day:

“What 1 thing could I do tomorrow, that when I do will make the day feel like a success?”

Then make sure you do that one thing! It really is as simple as that (just make sure you 1 think REALLY is 1 thing and isn’t a million things disguised as 1 thing). And the best part – then everything else you do in the day, is bonus!

Try this for 30 days in a row and you will be on fire! Are you in and ready to join me doing this for the next 30 days? Leave me a comment to let me know YOU ARE IN!

Thank you for this great article! I can completely associate myself with this article. I do have goals slipping off of my radar because of what I perceive as life’s urgencies. I have been trying to deal with my top 5 priorities every day and when I do not accomplishing them, internal stress builds. Starting right now, I’ll use your plan to concentrate on my #1 priority for personal, family, and professional life.

Reading and listening to the law of attraction as directed by the law is giving me a lot of peace of mind to take action and achieve every step i take now!
Law of attraction is “AWESOME” to me. All Gratitude to the team.
I personally recommend the Law Of Attraction to everyone that cares to know and improve their life exponentially.

    Hello Carolyn,

I just read your post today. Although I would like to say it was that easy
to pick and choose which activities are a priority in my life; there are
people in my life that constantly do a “guilt trip” on me if I don’t help them all the time;since
they believe they come first and their problems should always be handled
when they arise. You should drop everything and help them first and

On the other hand; when the “Law of Attraction” takes place it leaves me
awestruck because it’s a warm welcome and most of the time totally
unexpected. That’s what I love about it all.

    Thank you.
