Your life won’t change unless…

Here’s what I’ve realized…

Your life won’t change unless you change it!

Now, of course I mean this in the way that you assume — you know I am a firm believer in the fact that YOU are responsible and capable of changing your life…

BUT, I also mean it in an unexpected way…

Here’s what I realized one day and I was shocked…

Your life won’t change unless you change it — and sometimes all (or some) of the things have happened that you thought would change your life and yet you find yourself living the same life as before…

Let me give you an example –

A while back I had a plan — I was working my tail off to make several businesses take off and to justify working so hard, I focused on how my life would change when I hit the next level and started consistently making 5 figures a month…the goal isn’t what matters here, for me it wasn’t about money, it was about what I would do with the money…and we all have that something that “When it happens we will live like this…” — You know what I’m talking about…

I had plans of monthly massages and fun adventures and many more things…

The details don’t matter — what does matter is that I KNEW that when I hit that financial point I would finally be able to chill out and stop working my tail off…

Guess what happened…

6 months after I had consistently been at that financial goal I had a huge realization as I was running to grab some food so I could cram it in my mouth before I ran back to my computer to work until 10 pm…

And the realization was that I had reached those goals I had and yet, my life hadn’t changed because I hadn’t changed it…

I was still living like I was before…

And it was up to me…

I had to make myself do the things that I had put in front of myself to make my goals exciting or else it didn’t matter how much money I was making, my life was the same…

YIKES!

So when I say that your life won’t change unless YOU change it, I mean that in 2 different ways…

1. YOU have to do what is needed to change your life

2. Then YOU need to do what is needed to make sure your life ACTUALLY changes

Don’t wait until you have a million dollars or whatever it is the BIG goal is…this really isn’t about money…

Start changing NOW!

The 80/20 Rule Applies to Everything

When it comes to attracting money, making money from your passion, discovering your passion and purpose, cultivating loving relationships,getting into shape and EVERYTHING else…

The 80/20 rule applies!

So what is the 80/20 rule?

Most of us have heard of it, but typically it is used when people are talking about sales and business…

Since I’m telling you that the 80/20 rule applies to EVERYTHING I need to tell you what it is AND how to use it!

It’s simple really…

When you break down your actions in any area of your life, I promise you that you will find that about 20% of these actions are the ones that bring you results.

So, the 80/20 rule means this…

Spend 80% of your time on the 20% that brings you results!

For most people it is the opposite…

Most people spend 80% of their time on the 80% that doesn’t bring them results…

Why?

Because most often the 80% that doesn’t bring you the most results is where it is easiest to throw your energy.

Let me use business as an example…

A good friend of mine has a very successful business…but it wasn’t that way only 2 years ago…

I worked with him and coached him and this is what we did.

  • First we assessed his subscriber/customer base. We realized that 20% were the customers that brought in the most revenue.
  • Then we looked at where he was spending the majority of his time and where do you think the majority of his time was going?

YOU GUESSED IT…

He was spending 80% of his time dealing with questions, issues and requests made by the 80% of his subscribers/customers that didn’t continually bring in revenue…

Yikes!

That explained it…

Of course he knew that he still needed to give those people attention, but certainly not the majority of his attention. So we created systems and brought on a great customer service rep and took other measures to make sure those 80% were taken care of but in only 20% of the time.

He then put the bulk of his efforts and focus on cultivating his relationship with the 20% and his business boomed.

It is the same with money…

I worked with a client last year who was spending 80% of his time on product refinement and 20% of his time on marketing.  Now, I am the first one to tell you that you HAVE to provide value in any product or service you provide…

BUT

Once you have a valuable product or service to offer, you MUST spend 80% of your time getting it out there or the value won’t matter.

Think about it…

How does this apply to:

  • Making Money?
  • Losing Weight?
  • Attracting your Perfect Mate?
  • Discovering and Living Your Passion?
  • Living an Abundant and Healthy Life?

etc. etc. etc.

Here’s an exercise for you:

  1. Break your life into categories like Health, Finances, Relationships, Business, Spirituality, Relaxation and Fun etc.
  2. Write down the actions, experiences etc. that bring you the most success in each category
  3. Write down the actions, experiences etc. that you spend the bulk of your time on in each category

If you answered the same things for #2 and #3…

Good for you…

If you didn’t (and that will be most of you)…

You need a plan…

How can you start to shift so that you spend 80% of your time and resource on the 20% that brings you the most results?

You Won’t Save the World by Giving Your Solution Away for Free

Have I already hit a sore spot?

I know it’s a touchy subject when it comes to making money from your passion, and I hit on it slightly in one of my posts a few weeks ago and I’m still getting emails about it.

So what’s the nerve I’ve hit?

I’ll tell you…

You won’t save the world by giving your solution away for free!

We’ve been doing all of this work on finding your passion and making money from it and discovering how you can help people…

In other words, defining what solution you have to someone else’s problem…

I do one-on-one and group coaching to help people do all of this and time and time again one of my clients will say to me…

‘But I want to make the world a better place and if I have a solution that someone else needs, shouldn’t I give it to them for free?’

YIKES!

NO!

Here’s the deal…

Do I want you to take advantage of people?

No, of course not!

But the fact of the matter is you are NEVER going to make the world a better place by giving your solution away for free for 2 main reasons…

1. If you give it away for free, how long do you think you’ll be able to keep giving it away? Honestly, won’t you end up depleted of resources like time and money and energy if you go this route? I say this to my coaching clients like a mantra, “When you fly in an airplane, there’s a reason they tell you to put the oxygen mask on your self first.”

2. People don’t have anything at stake if it’s free and if you REALLY want to help people they have to have something at stake.

Now before you argue with me on that second point, I have proof…

Years ago, I had enough people ask me why I didn’t give my coaching for free so I thought it would be an interesting experiment. I invited 10 people to work with me one-on-one for free. This normally would have been a $5000 investment for them to work with me, but I agreed to have them pay that amount once they finished the program and saw what it could do for them.

What do you think happened?

Well…the first 2 weeks went quite well, everyone stayed accountable and took the action I gave them to take and then…

Well, let’s just say that after 5 weeks I was putting all my time and effort into chasing them down.

I called a group session together and asked them what they thought the problem was…

I’ll be completely honest about the response…

  • 1 of the men in the group said that I just wasn’t the coach for him
  • 1 woman said that she realized she really didn’t want to do what it would take to be an enterpreneur
  • 1 younger guy didn’t even call into the group session
  • And the 7 remaining people agreed that because they didn’t have any skin in the game, the program had gone to the bottom of their priority list…

They literally told me that because they didn’t have their investment in the program pressuring them to follow through, they just weren’t making it a priority at all.

Ultimately, as a group, we called off the experiment and 3 of the people made the investment to start working with me…

The results?

2 of them now have extremely successful businesses and the third didn’t follow through anyway so I let him out of the program.

So, I’ll say this a million times if I have to…

If you have a solution that will help people, and you really want to help as many people as you possible can, the results will be much better for everyone if you don’t give it to them for free!

I’m all for giving and charity, but that isn’t what this is about…

You don’t have to charge huge amounts of money, but it does need to be enough that it inspires the person to follow through and actually use the solution you have offered them…

If you want to make money from your passion, please take this to heart…

Put the oxygen mask on yourself first and then get out there and you’ll be able to help all the people you can reach!

If you don’t know what you want, The Law of Attraction doesn’t work

If you had asked me what I wanted a few years ago, I would have fumbled around for an answer and come up with that I wanted more money and more success and to feel excited about my life. But if you had asked me to get specific, I would have been flustered.

Why?

For me, it was a couple of things…

  1. I knew there was MUCH MORE for me, but I couldn’t quite put a finger on what it was.
  2. I was terrified to try to define it, because I didn’t want to attract the wrong thing.

I was never one of those people that thought the Law of Attraction doesn’t work. In fact, I always had complete faith that it works and that is what froze me at times, because I didn’t want to put the power of the law of attraction into manifesting something that I didn’t really want or worse, thought I wanted because I was feeling fearful and desperate.

And because I didn’t get specific, I attracted a whole bunch of things that fit my general requests, but they were never quite right.

For example…in 2 weeks time, I went from making less than $1000/month (in New York City…YIKES) to making OVER $5000/month. BUT…once the excitement wore off, I realized I was making money doing something that I didn’t want to do.

I adjusted, got specific and started attracting what I DID want and this taught me that you can always adjust your focus and change what you are attracting.

The moral of the story is that it is better to get specific and use the power of the Law of Attraction to attract what you are focusing on and then, if you need to, redefine your focus as you discover more of what you want…than it is to float around generally attracting things that are ‘kind of’ what you want.

Here’s the key…

It doesn’t matter why you are having trouble getting specific…

What matters is that you have a tool to help you GET SPECIFIC!

Here’s an exercise to do just that:

Grab 2 pieces of paper and a timer.

Put the timer on for 5 minutes.

In single sentences, write down everything that YOU DO NOT WANT.

Write it all down…all the things that drive you crazy about your life…everything you DON’T want to define you…EVERYTHING…

DO IT NOW…and then come back.

Welcome back…

OK…now look at the list of awfulness and take each sentence and on another piece of paper write down the opposite.

For instance, if you wrote, “I don’t want to be poor” then you would write on the other piece of paper “I want to be rich”.

NOW this is the Law of Attraction Key we talked about last time…YOU MUST write down specifics of what being rich is to you.

Don’t skip this part of the exercise. I know it might seem like a lot…but ask yourself if you’re ready to start using the Law of Attraction to work for you…and if the answer is ‘Yes’ then take the time to do this and get specific…trust me…it’s worth it.
